Keeping pipes insulated in unheated areas of a building reduces the risk of the pipes freezing and possibly
bursting. Properly fitted, pipe insulation will also provide a barrier to corrosion. In the UK it is relatively cheap to
insulate pipes against the cold, as we only experience moderately cold winters.
Insulating hot water pipes, even in heated areas, reduces heat loss through the pipes and can keep
the pipes hotter, enabling water heaters to be run more efficiently. Pipe insulation also has the additional benefit
of providing a barrier, which will reduce or remove the risk of burns from hot pipes.
Types of pipe insulation available from NIPS UK
We stock Armaflex and Rockwool.
Armaflex is a flexible insulation which is very easy to install, prevents energy loss and reduces the
risk of corrosion.
Rockwool acts as acoustic insulation, as well as reducing heat loss or gain through pipework. It is
supplied in pre-formed sections of stone wool insulation, covered in a layer of factory applied foil.
The sections are pre-slit to snap onto pipes and are then sealed with backing tape. Other types of pipes insulation are available to order.
Ensure the pipes are clean and dry. Moisture will cause the insulation to be less effective and possibly
Check the insulation annually, ideally in Autumn, to ensure that it remains in good condition, that
the pipes are still completely covered, and that joints are tight. If any parts of the pipe are not
covered, reseal them as soon as possible.
